Mikel Arteta linked with Athletic Bilbao

Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta is a candidate to replace Ander Herrera at Athletic Bilbao, according to reports.

Spanish publication Marca claims the La Liga outfit have set their sights on the 32-year-old, and are considering a £3million bid to try and bring the player back to his homeland.

Herrera transfer

Herrera completed his move to Manchester United earlier today (Thursday), with the playmaker leaving for Old Trafford in a €36million deal. He becomes the first major signing under new manager Louis van Gaal.

The Red Devils will be hoping the 24-year-old can hit the ground running after a disastrous Premier League campaign last term, when David Moyes failed to live up to the expectations set under Sir Alex Ferguson.

In Spain though, the focus is already on who Bilbao will bring in to replace one of their star players, and it could well be the Gunners’ midfield veteran.

Arsene Wenger brought the player to the Emirates Stadium in the summer of 2011, and he’s gone on to become an integral part of the Arsenal side. Arteta has also taken the captain’s armband when required, and helped them lift the FA Cup at the end of last season.

Whilst he’s not the flashiest or most eye-catching of players, there is no doubt that Arteta does an important job for the Gunners, and would be a miss if he were sold.

Despite his advancing year, £3million seems a little cheap, and Arsenal should try and push for a little more cash.

With Bilbao cashing in on the riches of Manchester United, there is no reason why their domestic rivals can’t try and take advantage as well.
