Sport can often throw up some massively entertaining moments and sometimes it can throw up some dull moments too. But when moments of a heart warming nature appear, that's when it takes on a whole new meaning and transcends sport.
This week that happened when WWE superstar The Rock called injured rugby league star Alex McKinnon to wish him well as he hopes to recover from a broken neck. The Rock has been on the Gold Coast of Australia in the Brisbane area for the past four or five months because he's been filming one of his latest movies.
Interview on 'The Footy Show'
Popular rugby league TV show 'The Footy Show' were in the area this week and had the chance to sit down for an interview with the former superstar wrestler. League star and Cronulla Sharks winger Beau Ryan did the interview and asked The Rock if he would be willing to call McKinnon and wish him well.
Having knowledge of the injury and McKinnon's story already, The Rock jumped at the opportunity and offered some really kinds words of thanks and advice for the Newcastle Knights forward amongst talkback from McKinnon that you obviously can't hear in the video at the bottom.
"Hey Alex, it's Dwayne Johnson. I'm sitting here with Beau…It's what you always do with Beau, he's embarrassing everybody," Johnson said.
"I want to tell you that your story is very inspiring, and I've been shooting on the Gold Coast for the past four or five months and I was watching 'The Footy Show' and they mentioned you on there.
"I managed to get a lot of detail on what happened, and I just wanted to tell you that I appreciate your strength and I appreciate you inspiring not only me man but millions of people. It's really a pleasure talking to you."
The Alex McKinnon story
McKinnon is still only 22 and he had look set for a promising career in the NRL before his horrific injury.
The injury took place in March when the Newcastle Knights were facing Melbourne Storm. McKinnon was just carrying a normal ball up to take on the defense when he was tackle by three Storm players and upended.
McKinnon ended up above the horizontal and was crushed to the grass on his head by the players in the tackle. This resulted in a broken neck for the forward, who was left in a paralyzed state.
McKinnon is a huge fan of The Rock
No doubt the move to send good wishes by The Rock will have helped Alex McKinnon, with the rugby forward a well known wrestling fan and a fan of The Rock.
It turns out that the last tweet that McKinnon had sent out before his injury was a retweet of one of The Rock's tweets. It was quite an inspiring piece of video that the above quotes were captured from and if you want to see the full piece just click on the video below.
