The 2014/15 Premier League fixtures are out and the clock is ticking down to the start of the new campaign. Sorry if you’re still riddled with World Cup fever, but you know you’ll come crawling back to club football once this summer’s showpiece international tournament reaches its conclusion next month.
We’ve compiled a list featuring six potential contenders for the coveted Premier League Golden Boot award. Liverpool’s Luis Suarez claimed the accolade last season, scoring 31 league goals, but his made the task of winning the award for a second consecutive campaign a damn sight harder for himself after sinking his teeth into Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini and earning himself a four-month ban from any football-related activity.
The Uruguayan striker might never play another Premier League match if Barcelona get their way this summer.
Honourable mentions
We’ve taken all of the odds from SkyBet’s comprehensive market, which contains the names of around 100 Premier League players. Realistically, the Golden Boot award will be won by one of the seven players in this article, but we feel it’s only right to list the names of some outside congeners.
Yaya Toure - 18/1
Scored 20 goals from midfield last season. But will he still be at Manchester City next season?
Romelu Lukaku - 18/1
The 21-year-old has scored 32 league goals over the last two seasons. Will Jose Mourinho give him a chance at Chelsea next term?
Rickie Lambert - 33/1
Can the boyhood Liverpool fan step in for Luis Suarez at the start of next season?
Eden Hazard - 33/1
If Eden Hazard wants to reach the same level as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, he needs to start scoring a similar number of goals.
Fernando Torres - 40/1
Who are we kidding.
