Genius idea provides a house for your college football tailgate

College football already draws crowds from all over the country.

Especially in the South, a weekend gridiron game can draw pilgrimages from all over to the stadium. These events are day or even week-long affairs, with eager fans hitching up their motor-homes or pick-up trucks and getting ready to tailgate.

And with all those people drinking late into the night, there is definitely a demand for a safe place to stay nearby.

That's the selling point for University Football Rentals, a real estate company which rents out properties for gameday weekends. The business has homes in 28 different college towns, from the University of Oregon in the Pacific Northwest to the sunny climes of Florida State in the Southeast.

Here's how it works:

Homeowners in a college football town, such as Baton Rouge, La., decide that they want to rent out their home during football game weekends. They register with the site, which then matches them with a group of fans looking to visit, usually from Friday to Saturday.

The fans pay for the housing, at a price set by the homeowner, and then move in when their date arrives. Most of these deals have to be set weeks, if not months, before the actual game date.

After the payment is made, University Football Rentals adds an eight percent processing fee to the total amount.

The business plan is genius for its simplicity: the website provides a platform to link temporary rentors with homeowners, then gets paid for building the connection.

However, the company is not stuck with a property of its own and it doesn't have to accrue any other costs throughout the process.

It's no secret that fans are going to stay in town after a big game.

Now instead of being forced to battle thousands of other people to book a hotel room at exorbitant rates, they can get a more comfortable and probably less stressful residence nearby, without fighting the same crowds.

Chris Pesigan began the company after seeing how effective short-term leases were when he rented out three properties on Craigslist before a series of Notre Dame games.

"We listed all three homes on the website and they booked within a month. We said shoot, we are on to something,” Pesigan said to WRBL News in Columbus, Ga.

University Football Rentals rents homes in one town that is not primarily known for its college football: Green Bay, Wis. That's probably due to the fact that fans of the NFL's Green Bay Packers are well-known for their tendency to travel from far away to see their team play.
