The USA don't need Landon Donovan & his lack of support

USA are going strong in this year's World Cup, but when they need the support of their fellow Americans at an important stage of the tournament, American footballer Landon Donovan hasn't been the man to look to, according to ITV Sport.

Team USA managed to escape the group of death with a fantastic 2-1 victory against Ghana before taking on Portugal and grabbing a point in a 2-2 draw - a shame considering Jurgen Klinsmann's team deserved the win.

Defeat didn't dent their progress

Then in the final group game they needed a point to qualify only to lose 1-0 to Germany in the final group game, as they put up a strong fight against Joachim Low's technical team but still qualified due to Ghana losing to Portugal.

Now what awaits USA is a round of 16 tie against Belgium, but before the World Cup had even started their past captain Landon Donovan didn't offer much support in their build up.

According to ITV Sport Donovan wanted USA to slip up in their friendly against Azerbaijan days before their campaign had kicked off, but stated afterwards how he regretted having this mind-set.

What he said

"I'll be completely honest, watching them play Azerbaijan, inside, part of me was thinking, I hope the game doesn't go very well today," Donovan said.

"I thought, if we get a 1-0 win and the team doesn't perform well, that would feel good.

"That's a bad way to live your life, it doesn't help me, it doesn't help the team, it doesn't help the energy that the team needs."

USA went on to win the friendly 2-0 - it was an important victory for Klinsmann and his team as it was the first of their three friendlies lined-up before their first World Cup fixture against 2010 quarter-finalists Ghana.

Social media reaction

Landon Donovan was left out of the World Cup squad by the German manager which led social media to go crazy, fans stating their dissatisfaction at leaving their talisman out in the cold.

The 32-year-old has made over 150 appearances for the U.S Soccer team, scoring 57 goals having made his debut back in 2000.

Donovan has also featured in three World Cups and this would have been his fourth as the striker sits as USA's all-time leading goal scorer.

But there may be others reasons why Donovan wasn't selected, as the American has only featured nine times scoring three so far this season, while the season before Donovan featured 22 times and scored ten goals.

Injury crisis?

America at the moment is missing a striker to hold up play as Jozy Altidore suffered an early injury in the Ghana game which ruled him out for the rest of the tournament.

Klinsmann now relies on Clint Dempsey to lead the line, and the former Fulham striker has played the role well picking up goals against both Ghana and Portugal, whilst holding the captaincy for America.

Donovan may feel hard done by in not representing USA for the World Cup but maybe it is time for the young players to come through. Klinsmann is looking to the future instead of relying on the old guard to pull USA through major tournaments. And it's working.
