Lionel Messi has largely escaped the criticism that has been aimed at Argentina in recent days, with Alejandro Sabella's men - one of the pre-tournament favourites to succeed on enemy territory in Brazil - having proved less than convincing during their extra-time second-round victory over Switzerland on Tuesday.

While the Barcelona maestro has shown glimpses of his established genius, his teammates have been somewhat lacking.

Messi popularity

Messi's immense popularity, however, does not appear to have suffered as a result - as shown by his presence in internet giant Google's recently released most-searched XI of the 2014 World Cup so far.

As reported by The London Evening Standard, such a formidable lineup - decided by position - was revealed earlier this week, offering a keen an intriguing insight into the players at this year's tournament who are generating the most interest worldwide.
