Premier League duo Manchester United and Chelsea refused to meet Toni Kroos' £90,000-a-week wage demands, according to the Express.

This has led the German international to set his sights on Spain, as he looks set to join La Liga giants Real Madrid. The future of the Bayern Munich superstar has been uncertain for some time now, with both United and Chelsea having been credited with interest in him of late.

However, as his time at Bundesliga outfit Bayern Munich looks set to come to an end, it appears that he will join Cristiano Ronaldo and Co. at the Bernabeu. The German midfielder could have arrived in the Premier League, however, but United and Chelsea were seemingly unprepared to offer him what he wanted.

Despite the player only having one-year left on his current deal with Bayern, it appears that Real will pay around £23 million for his services, and are prepared to offer £180,000-a-week gross over a five year period, meaning he will earn the £90,000-a-week he is after because of Spanish tax laws.

United options

With Kroos set for Madrid, it remains to be seen as to whether the Red Devils step up their interest in any other midfield stars this summer. Under David Moyes last term, United struggled in the middle of the park as they slumped to a seventh placed Premier League finish.

Louis van Gaal has already purchased Spanish ace Ander Herrera to play alongside Michael Carrick at the Theatre of Dreams, but United fans will be hoping for at least one more addition in the midfield area.

The likes of Tom Cleverley, Marouane Fellaini and Darren Fletcher all struggled to  find form last season, and will be hoping to make an impression under the new regime.

Chelsea options

Chelsea, on the other hand, have also dipped into the midfield market this summer, having signed Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona. After Frank Lampard's departure from Stamford Bridge, it's expected that the Spaniard will play alongside Nemanja Matic under Jose Mourinho next term.

The likes of Ramires and Co. will also be hoping for a starring role in the middle of the park at Chelsea next season.

Van Gaal vs Mourinho

Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho will both be desperate to land the Premier League title next term. The new United manager will be hoping to enjoy success in his debut season at Old Trafford, whilst Mourinho will be targeting silverware after failing to land a trophy in 2013/14.

Van Gaal and Mourinho will go head-to-head for the first time in the Premier League on October 25, as United host the Blues at Old Trafford.
