Arsenal are reportedly keeping an eye on young defender Gino Peruzzi as they look to further reinforce options in the right-back position following the departure of Bacary Sagna this summer.

The Daily Mirror are running with a report from Italian journalist Gianluca di Marzio that claims Arsene Wenger has been keeping tabs on the 22-year-old and could make a move for him as early as next week.

Javi Manquillo desperate to join Arsenal

Arsenal confirmed the signing of Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle United last week and the France international is expected to replace his compatriot as the first-choice right-back at Emirates Stadium.

More options

However, the report suggests they are looking for another option in that position and Peruzzi would move to the Premier League to act as Debuchy’s understudy. Arsenal have also been credited with an interest in Atletico Madrid youngster Javi Manquillo.

All this does not bode well for Carl Jenkinson, who had been Sagna’s understudy for the past two seasons and many expected would get a more prominent role after the Frenchman left to join Premier League champions Manchester City once his contract ran out this summer.

Peruzzi has impressed many in his single season with Catania in Serie A, but he was well-known throughout South America long before his successful switch to Europe. Then a 19-year-old, he made some bold statements ahead of a clash between his former club in Argentina Velez Sarsfield and Brazilian club Santos.

Neymar was the star of the Santos side at the time and struggled to make any impact in the Copa Libertadores tie because of a stellar performance by Peruzzi.
