Manchester United are the heavy favourites to sign Bastian Schweinsteiger should he decide to leave Bayern Munich this summer.
Bookmaker Sky Bet has Manchester United as the 8/11 favourites to sign the World Cup winning midfielder before September 2nd, the close of the transfer deadline, ahead of the likes of outsiders like Monaco, Paris Saint Germain and Barcelona.
Success in Brazil
The Bayern Munich star was integral to Germany's triumph in Brazil this summer, as they capped a memorable tournament with a 1-0 win over Argentina in the Maracana.
Schweinsteiger, alongside Sami Khedira and Toni Kroos, was the heartbeat of a team that stunned Brazil during their 7-1 demolition in the semi-finals and he was exceptional throughout the tournament.
But while he was named to the World Cup All-Star team after the 2010 tournament in South Africa, Schweinsteiger was overlooked this year in favour of the Madrid-bound Kroos.
Because Kroos, a one-time target for United himself, has completed his summer move, joining Spanish Champions League winners Real Madrid. He had just one year left on his Bayern Munich contract.
The Bavarian giants are unlikely to want to lose both Schweinsteiger and Kroos in one window, even considering the riches available to Bayern boss Pep Guardiola in central midfield. That would suggest a move is unlikely, so it seems strange to see Sky Bet pricing the move so favourably towards United.
Van Gaal connection?
The 29-year-old midfielder did play under Louis Van Gaal during the Dutchman's time as manager in Germany, and the new United boss has been linked with several of his old charges - both at Bayern Munich and the Netherlands national team.
Central midfield was an area in urgent need of strengthening prior to the new season, and United have addressed it to a certain extent with the recruitment of Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao. But United fans will want at least one other big name to bolster the position, considering the struggles the club went through last season.
