Major League Soccer is not the best league in the world, but it's certainly not as bad as former Chelsea star Ashley Cole has recently made out.

As many will know, Ashley Cole signed for Italian Serie A club AS Roma this month after his contract with Chelsea ran out.

The offer to go and join Roma wasn't the only choice Cole could have made, with numerous reports suggesting that the former England international was getting offers from MLS teams in the US.

Cole's "ignorant" remarks

Ashley Cole is well known for creating controversy. When you cheat on England's darling, formerly known as Cheryl Cole, it comes with the territory. Not only that, he is hated for crossing the divide between rival London EPL sides Arsenal and Chelsea.

He was also one of a select few to be actually booed whilst playing for the England team, and in the last week he has been receiving hate from Americans for his derogatory comments on Major League Soccer.

"Before I signed at Roma people on here killing me about playing there, saying it's for the money and easy life style. I choose to play in a more demanding place and team. How about you just worry about your team and I'll worry about mine. I'm talking about the MLS by the way," Cole tweeted this past week.

Legend hits back

These comments have incensed fans across America, but don't worry MLS fans, Liverpool legend Steve Nicol has come to the defense of MLS with a stinging attack on Ashley Cole.

Nicol was incensed that Cole labelled playing in America as "an easy ride," and his response was brutal.

"Such an ignorant comment. MLS doesn't want you thanks," said the former 1984 Liverpool European Cup winner via Twitter.

Lampard's move

Ashley Cole's comments seem even more bizarre because his former teammate, Frank Lampard, has only just made the move to MLS this week. After months of deliberating, Lampard signed for New York City FC to become their second designated player when they debut in MLS next March.

It would be interesting to hear what Lampard makes of the comments from Cole. It's likely that he wouldn't care too much because the midfielder is more over the hill than his counterpart, with three years on Cole.

One things for sure, Ashley Cole won't be making a home in MLS in the future after his display of ignorance, and there's one Liverpool legend who will certainly be happy about that.
