The Arizona Cardinals and superstar cornerback Patrick Peterson have reached an agreement on a long term contract extension that will keep the Pro-Bowl player with the franchise till 2019.

Peterson was in fact the first person to break the news that he had signed a new deal with the team when he let all excited Cardinal fans know through his official twitter account.

The Pro-Bowl cornerback tweeted saying: "Happy to announce my 5 year extension with @AZCardinals! $70M and $48M Guaranteed!! #AZCardinals #P2Nation #YearOfTheCardinal"

Undoubtably one of the upcoming stars in the NFL, the 24-year-old was selected with the 5th overall pick in the 2011 draft by the Cardinals, the LSU product has quickly developed into one of the most dangerous playmakers and top shut-down corners in the entire NFL.

Peterson is also an elite punt returner with electrifying speed, he has already showed his returner qualities in the NFL as he has amassed four touchdowns on punt returns in his rookie season.

The Cardinals have guaranteed $48million of this bank-busting contract extension with a player who they believe they can build a defence around, beginning to become a mentor as he matures in the league, Peterson has already taken other players such as Tyrann Mathieu under his wing whilst with Arizona.

The deal seemed to be on the cards since the news that Richard Sherman had been rewarded for his remarkable season with a big contract offered by the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks.

If Sherman is considered the top cornerback in today's game, then Peterson is certainly nipping at his heels. Despite his insatiable confidence and willingness to brag, even Sherman would admit that Peterson is the real deal when it comes to competition at his position.

It should also be noted that since Peterson came into the league in 2011, only two cornerbacks have actually intercepted more passes that he has. Richard Sherman unsurprisingly sits atop of the list with 20 whilst Peterson (12) trails Tim Jennings in second who has 15.

The monster deal for Peterson really does announce his capabilities an elite player, you can definitely expect his performances to mirror the confidence the team has shown in the young cornerback.
