Tom Huddlestone misses from five-yards against Trencin

Hull City midfielder Tom Huddlestone produced one of the worst misses of recent times in Europe on Thursday night in a bore 0-0 draw with Trencin.

The Tigers were playing in a Europa League qualifier, and travelled to Slovakia hoping to put one foot in the competition proper after finishing runner-up in last season’s FA Cup.

No TV coverage

A lack of TV coverage suggests the interest might not be that high in Steve Bruce’s side at this stage, but several thousand Hull fans made the trip to see the the make their European debut.

And, thankfully, one supporter got his mobile phone out when Huddlestone had a golden chance to open the scoring on 63 minutes. Shane Long had been fouled in the box and the Tigers had a penalty to take the lead.

Watch the miss here...

Former Spurs midfielder Huddlestone’s effort was poor, going low to the keeper’s left. Ladislav Volesak made the save, but the ball slowly bounced back into the path of the advancing 27-year-old to smash home…or so you’d think.

Smashed over

Instead, the four-cap England international absolutely smashed the ball onto the top of the crossbar and over with one of the worst misses you’re ever likely to see.

We feel pretty safe in saying it’s the worst miss of the season so far, and somebody will have to have a nightmare to go one 'better' when the domestic campaigns get into full swing.

The sides will meet again at the KC Stadium next Thursday, and it's anybody's tie for the taking following the stalemate at Stadion Pod Dubnom.
