Monaco are said to be discuss the possibility of a transfer for Shakhtar Donetsk’s Douglas Costa, who has been a target for both Manchester United and Arsenal this summer, according to the Daily Star.
Arsenal were thought to be the number one destination for the Brazilian attacking midfielder, piping rivals United to the signature of the 23-year-old. However, it seems that Monaco, with their wealthy financial backers, have jumped ahead of the Gunners and now seem the most likely to sign the forward.
The player has previously said that he does not want to return to Ukraine, with the political unrest currently affecting the country the main reason. This had led to speculation of a move to the Premier League, but it seems as if last year’s Ligue 1 runners-up have taken the initiative and are said to be in talks about a possible transfer.
They are also attempting to sign Costa’s teammate Alex Teixeira in a joint bid that could cost around €50million. Monaco are currently trying to replace James Rodriguez who moved to Real Madrid earlier this month after dazzling at the World Cup in Brazil.
Arsenal, who were said to be lining up a £15.8 million bid for Costa, have already been rumoured to have made a bid for the player. However, it was back in 2011 when the £10million fee for the 23-year-old was rejected. New United boss Louis van Gaal is also said to be interested in the player, as was he predecessor Sir Alex Ferguson.
The Scot tried to secure a trial for Costa in 2009 when he played for Brazilian side Gremio, but the Brazilians refused to let the attacking player travel to England.
Costa moved to Shakhtar Donetsk in the January transfer window of 2010 for €6million. He has made 170 appearances for the Ukrainian club, scoring 33 goals. He has been a frequent member of the squad during the club’s Champions League campaigns including the 2012-13 season where they knocked Chelsea out at the group stage.
The 23-year-old has won the Ukrainian league five times as well as winning both national cups three times. In 2010-11, he was part of the team that won the treble in Ukraine. His teammate, Teixeira, is a 24-year-old attacking midfielder who moved to the club at the same time as Costa. He also won the treble, making 142 appearances scoring 39 times.
