Manchester United clear to sign Angel di Maria as PSG pull out

Angel di Maria's next club has been thrown into doubt after PSG's president Nasser Al-Khelaifi stated in a news conference that the French club, who were rumoured to have wrapped up a deal for the Argentinian midfielder, deemed him too expensive.

PSG deal off?

Di Maria is almost certain to leave Real Madrid. Having had an exceptional season at the Bernabeu, the arrival of James Rodriguez will push Di Maria on to the bench, and many clubs are reportedly interested in signing him.

Of all the transfer sagas going on in Europe, Angel Di Maria to PSG was seemingly a dead cert. PSG shirts with "Di Maria" and "11" (a number currently available) on the back had been photographed in a merchandise shop

If that wasn't proof enough, this photo had been leaked of Di Maria in a PSG shirt with the message "Bienvenue (welcome), Angel Di Maria" in the background. A fee of reportedly €69.25m had been agreed.

However, the move was ruled out in a press conference where Paris Saint-Germain's president Nasser Al-Khelaifi said: "We spoke with Real, Di Maria was too expensive."

It's believed, however, that the situation may have been different had PSG not suffered UEFA FFP sanctions to limit their spending.

Where next?

Manchester United have been backed as favourites by bookies to sign the Argentine, and all the talk in the media is about Louis van Gaal acquiring Di Maria. But, thinking about it, does this move really make sense?

Van Gaal's innovative new formation, officially recognised as a 3-5-2, seems to have no room for him. Di Maria prefers to play as a No. 10, or occasionally a winger. Van Gaal's formation does not use wingers, and they have their No. 10 in Juan Mata. Additionally, a defensive midfielder may be required to partner the more offensive Ander Herrera.

The team held second favourites to sign Di Maria, PSG's title rivals Monaco, could well end up signing Di Maria.

They have a large foreign investment, but are not restricted by Financial Fair Play. Additionally, they will be looking for a replacement for James Rodriguez. With Di Maria playing behind Dimitar Berbatov and Radamel Falcao, Monaco could contest the Ligue 1 Title.
