The WWE continues to cut its budget by releasing some of their employees and departments, with the latest casualty being former WWE and World Heavyweight Champion Alberto Del Rio.
The surprise firing was announced on Thursday night and the WWE imminently broke the news on their main page. The interesting thing to note about the release was that when the company usually let go of a talent, they bury it deep within the website so it isn’t easy to find.
What has he done?
The fact that Del Rio’s release was on the main page suggested that he must have done something to really anger the company. Usually, articles on wwe.com wish the released talents the best in their future endeavours whereas they didn’t include that for Alberto Del Rio.
With more research and news still coming out of this story, his release came due to unprofessional content and an altercation with an employee. This occurred on the Tuesday tapings of Friday Night SmackDown where he supposedly slapped another employee who works for the companies social media department, as you can imagine that didn’t sit well with the company and they had to let go of him.
Del Rio has had a successful four years in the WWE, capturing the WWE Championship twice as well as holding the World Heavyweight Championship on two occasions.
However, he has fallen down the ranks over the last year or so and as we reported back in February, Alberto Del Rio was telling his fellow colleagues he will be retiring when his contract expires. He has been unhappy for a while and like CM Punk, has a lot of money saved up but has also been reported that AAA and TNA are looking to snap up the talented Mexican.

Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer revealed that TNA reportedly contacted Alberto Del Rio moments after the news of his release became public knowledge and they are confident of signing him, as their situation with Spike is better than it was last week. Del Rio will most likely have a 90 day no compete clause similar to most of the talents they let go, meaning he won’t be able to sign with any promotion until the 90 days are over.
He also went on to hint that Alberto Del Rio could potentially be TNA’s next World Champion, if he decides to carry on competing or he decides to retire which is what he was planning anyway.
The WWE are now also monitoring the superstars and divas Twitter accounts, any mistake could result in someone getting released so they are treading very carefully right now.
The fact that now both Alberto Del Rio and Ricardo Rodriguez have left the company, the WWE doesn’t have many lucha superstars left on the roster, with the original Sin Cara not there anymore plus the question mark about Rey Mysterio and his retirement, you should expect NXT superstar Kalisto to be fast tracked on to the main roster.
