With the news that two of the top light heavyweights in Bernard 'The Alien' Hopkins and Sergey 'Krusher' Kovalev will face off later this year, the fans have got a real fight to get excited about.

Hopkins: Still going strong

The evergreen Hopkins aged 49 is a phenomenal example of age being merely a number. For a man aged 49 to still be competing in sport is remarkable but for a 49 year old to be boxing at the highest level is simply incredible.

Hopkins is creating history and forcing people to rethink their ideas of what is old. He is the perfect role model for any young boxer who wants to have a long and successful career. He doesn't get hit very often and he outthinks his opponents.

Kovalev: Fearsome reputation cemented

Kovalev aged 31 has built a fearsome reputation for himself as an explosive puncher with a fantastic 23 knock outs coming from his 25 wins.

Kovalev is well known to British fight fans following his fight with the then WBO light heavyweight world champion Nathan Cleverly.

Kovalev dealt with Cleverly in destructive fashion via a fourth round TKO and has gone on to stop his three opponents since in emphatic fashion.

Both men will be looking to unify the division and claim to be the best fighter in their respective weight class.

Hopkins and Kovalev deserve praise

Too often in this sport do the best boxers fail to fight each other with politics getting in the way. It is the fans who are made to suffer as they miss out on the fights that should take place. This is one of the fights that the fans want and both men should be applauded for coming to an arrangement.

The two men will face-off on November 8 with the WBA, IBF and WBO titles on the line in what looks set to be one of the most interesting fights of the year.

There are those who say that Hopkins is too old to be facing a fighter as destructive as Kovalev and that is a serious health risk. Such sentiments seem unfounded though in relation to Hopkins.

Hopkins is a man who has fought the best out there for years now and who doesn't ever find himself on the end of a beating. He is more than capable of keeping himself out of danger in the fight and with his experience and ring craft he could come away with the win.

This is going to be a fascinating mix of styles between two of the top men in their division and this is exactly the sort of fight that the sport should try to make sure doesn't slip away.
