Arsenal transfer news: Vermaelen sale could force Wenger back to transfer market

Arsene Wenger admits the sale of Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona could force Arsenal back into the transfer market, but insists that summer signing Calum Chambers can offset the departure of their former captain. The 19-year-old impressed at centre-back in the Gunners 3-0 Community Shield win over Manchester City at Wembley on Sunday, and following his £16m switch from Southampton has been tipped for a big future in north London. Despite Chambers' impressive early showing Wenger will look to bring in another central defender as cover in a key area of his team, with Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny still expected to be the Frenchman's first-choice pairing this season.
