Manchester United won't be signing top defensive target Mats Hummels this summer, Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp has confirmed.
The German international was said to be at the very top of Louis van Gaal's transfer hitlist this summer as he goes about rebuilding his Manchester United squad. The Dutchman has admitted that he is short of defenders but has so far been unsuccessful in his attempts to land reinforcements, with Thomas Vermaelen opting to join Barcelona instead.
Hummels has emerged as one of the most established centre-backs in Europe, and helped his country win the World Cup while earning a spot in the team of the tournament in the process.
It was suggested that Manchester United were gearing up to make a £30 million raid for the 25-year-old before the close of the window, however the fact that Hummels was handed the captain's armband at Dortmund over the weekend was a major blow to their chances of pulling off the deal.
Now Jurgen Klopp has put the final nail in the coffin by publicly insisting that he won't be leaving. “He is going nowhere,” the German boss said when asked about Hummels' future. “He is staying with us.”
The news is the latest blow to Manchester United and their transfer plans. Van Gaal was charged with overhauling the squad he inherited from David Moyes following their worst ever Premier League campaign but as yet has been unable to sign a single player.
Time running out
He gave his approval for the transfer of Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera to go ahead while he was at the World Cup, but will hope to land his first player in the coming days.
That will most likely be Daly Blind from Ajax; the £20m-rated defender is said to be keen on a move to Old Trafford and can cover at centre-back and at full-back, which would go some way to solving two problem positions for Van Gaal.
Further up the field and they have been linked with big-money moves for Juan Cuadrado, Angel di Maria and Arturo Vidal but as yet nothing appears close to being completed.
Manchester United start their Premier League campaign against Swansea on Saturday at Old Trafford after picking up five wins from five in pre-season.
