Manchester United prepare £29m offer for Mats Hummels

Manchester United are set to launch a fresh bid for Borussia Dortmund star Mats Hummels in the region of £29 million, reports The Daily Express.

Louis van Gaal's chances of landing Hummels seemed to be over after the World Cup winner was named Dortmund's captain ahead of the new season. Manager Jurgen Klopp has always been adamant that he won't sell his star centre-back as well.

Fresh approach

With plenty of financial backing from Manchester United, Van Gaal is yet to be deterred in his attempts to land Hummels. The Dutchman is desperate to land a top centre-back and Hummels would be seen as a marquee signing of sorts.

Having missed out on Thomas Vermaelen, who decided to join Barcelona from Arsenal last week, Van Gaal will step up his efforts with the £29 million offer.

Dortmund price tag

Although Klopp has insisted he would not sell Hummels, it is believed Dortmund officials would take the decision out of the manager's hands should an offer of £30 million come in. Dortmund are renowned for cashing in on their stars for the right price, funding their success through player sales.

Matthias Ginter arrived this summer with some pundits believing he will eventually replace Hummels once the 25-year-old is sold.

Arsenal bidding war

Citing claims from Bild, the same reports says that Manchester United's bid could spark a war between themselves and Premier League rivals Arsenal. Arsene Wenger is keen to seal a replacement for Vermaelen and widespread reports have claimed Hummels is on his shortlist.

Having spent £60 million on transfers and £30 million added to the wage bill, Wenger does not have much left over from his £100 million budget. However, the £15 million received from Barcelona is available to him.

It seems more likely that Arsenal will search for a player to come in as a third choice option. Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny are developing a strong partnership at the back and only a special talent like Hummels would convince Wenger to change.

Arsenal have already signed a world-class talent in Alexis Sanchez so, again, it is hard to see a move for Hummels happening this summer. The prospect of seeing a target move to Old Trafford could be enough to stir Wenger into life though.

A battle Van Gaal cannot lose

If it comes down to straight fight between Arsenal and Manchester United, it would be a transfer battle Van Gaal could not afford to lose. Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand have both departed and no one has been brought in to replace them.

Only Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans remain, but Van Gaal needs at least two more established defenders to implement a 3-5-2 formation over the course of a season. Hummels would not only provide Manchester United with the lift that comes with the arrival of a superstar, but would also add much-needed strength to their back line ahead of a crucial season.
