Chelsea aim to live up to Premier League favourites tag

Football News

Chelsea came very close to winning the Premier League last season. They performed remarkably against Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal. They also are the only team to remain unbeaten against the top four teams.

Fantastic performances resulted in great wins away to Manchester City and Liverpool. However, results against the top teams isn't where Chelsea failed last season.

Mid-table teams were the Kryptonite to Chelsea which caused the London club from falling short of another Premier League title by five points. Five points that could of been claimed with an efficient goalscorer, better finishing and a cool head.

But can Chelsea win the Premier League next season?

Last season Jose Mourinho expressed his desire to bring a finisher to his club because of the lack of goals from Torres, Eto'o and Ba. Now that two of the three forwards have departed, Chelsea have brought in an old favourite in Didier Drogba and a deadly finisher in Diego Costa.

Drogba's résumé shows he has won and done it all, not by being just a spectator. Coming back for his second spell at Chelsea he is welcomed with a legendary status and a big fact that he has scored in every single final he has been involved in for Chelsea

Costa is the new name rumbling everyones lips after a destructive campaign in La Liga last season. Both of these new editions have proved they can score goals and influence the play enormously in any situation.

Replacing Legends

Both Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole left Stamford Bridge after last season. Two players that will be remembered after their performances over the last decade. Chelsea's all-time top scorer left for the MLS but only to find himself loaned to rival Manchester City until the MLS season starts.

Therefore Mourinho went out to capture the services of Cesc Fabregas to replace the legend. A player that has proven himself at Arsenal and Barcelona while also being one of the greatest playmakers in the Premier League. Fliipe Luis was also brought in to Chelsea to replace one of the best left backs in the world.

It is clear that it will be hard for Luis to live up to the place left by Cole. However Luis has came from being one of the stars of La Liga and is a great replacement to fill a vacant left back role. Both players will be adequate replacements if they live up to their past performances at their former clubs.

First-team Goalkeepers

One the greatest ever Mourinho signing is still performing exceptionally in the Premier League and it showed by winning the Golden Glove last season.

He will go down as one of the Premier League greats but with the return of Courtois, Mourinho has a selection problem as who will be the number one goalkeeper.

Thibaut Courtois is one of the best young goalkeepers in the world and needs first team football to continue his development. Chelsea now have two superb goalkeepers to choice from and wouldn't be in any trouble if one fell to an injury.

Chelsea have a full squad that can call up on replacements in every position on the pitch. From defensive to attacking players, Chelsea have many players in reserve to call upon if their first team go off form or are injured. A mix of experience, youth, playing styles and talent, they surely have a very dangerous squad that even the big teams should be worried about. The upcoming season looks to be an exciting one for Chelsea supporters.

Jose Mourinho is a man every football fan will have heard of. He has won the league in four different countries and the Champions League twice with two different teams. He also managed a great Inter Milan side that won the treble.

A manager that has done it all, won it all and no doubt capable of doing it all again. He knows how to handle big game situations. An eye on the future and he always has a plan. Whether you like him or not, he will win any team trophies.
