Cheick Tiote on Arsenal transfer radar

Premier League giants Arsenal are set to strengthen their midfield and are ready with a £8 million bid for Newcastle midfielder Cheick Tiote.

The defensive midfielder has been linked with the London club in the past few transfer windows but nothing materialised back then. However, now Newcastle seem eager to listen to what Arsenal can offer for Tiote’s services.

Tiote could be the second signing of The Gunners from Newcastle

If Arsenal succeed in signing Tiote it will be their second signing from The Magpies this summer after landing full-back Mathieu Debuchy for £12 million just after the World Cup.

Sami Khedira of Real Madrid and Sporting Lisbon wonderkid William Carvalho both of whom have been subject of Gunners interest in recent weeks would be better alternatives given that both the German and the Portuguese are younger than Tiote and can offer more depth to the already talented roster.

Issue with Discipline

The 28-year-old is a hard-tackler and has often been cautioned for his discipline on the pitch and hence has picked up 42 yellow cards in 107 appearances for Newcastle United.

But the Ivory Coast international is good at winning aerial duels and has reasonably fine passing and dribbling skills apart from his robust tackling.

He also has a Pass Success rate of 91.8% in the World Cup in Brazil while representing Ivory Coast.

Pardew might want more from Arsenal

Tiote’s current contract runs until 2017 and manager Alan Pardew might not be willing to do business unless Arsenal up their bid from £8 million for a player who still has three years in his contract at St. James' Park.

It remains to be seen if Arsene Wenger succeeds in his pursuit of the Ivorian as Tiote himself is keen to move to Emirates Stadium.
