Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has named his first Premier League side since taking the reigns at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman, fresh from his third-place finish with the national side and subsequent pre-season tour of America with the Red Devils, will be hoping to make a flying start as the club’s new manager following last season’s disappointments.

David Moyes failed to follow in the footsteps of Sir Alex Ferguson, and after Ryan Giggs’ brief tenure in temporary charge, the call came to the former Bayern Munich boss.

Rooney captain

He’s overseen a positive pre-season, and subsequently installed Wayne Rooney as club captain. And, the striker is an unsurprising starter against the Swans.

Vice-captain Darren Fletcher also plays, anchoring an attack-minded midfield, whilst the 3-5-2 formation should enable the wide wing-backs - including a resurgent Ashley Young - to push on and support the play going forward.

Manchester United

De Gea; Jones, Smalling, Blackett; Lingard, Fletcher, Herrera, Young; Mata; Rooney (c), Hernandez.

SUBS: Amos, James, M Keane, Fellaini, Kagawa, Nani, Januzaj.

Fabianski, Rangel, Amat, Williams (C), Taylor, Ki, Shelvey, Dyer, Sigurdsson, Routledge, Bony.

SUBS: Tremmel, Bartley, Richards, Tiendalli, Montero, Sheehan, Gomis.

Jesse Lingard is the big surprise in the starting line-up at Old Trafford, getting the nod ahead of the likes of Luis Nani and Adnan Januzaj.

Options are limited in defence, and Tyler Blackett starts alongside Phil Jones and Chris Smalling in the absence of Jonny Evans.

Ander Herrera and Juan Mata will be expected to create the chances going forward, and Danny Welbeck's injury means Javier Hernandez has a chance to shine alongside Rooney.

Bench options

Off the bench, Marouane Fellaini and Shinji Kagawa are the other options of note, with a couple of youngsters available from the bench.
