Manchester United have been told £40million is the price to sign Brazilian midfielder Douglas Costa this summer - a player also linked with Arsenal.

The 23-year-old attacking midfielder has been linked with a move away from Shakhtar Donetsk this summer, with AC Milan also keen on the uncapped playmaker.

Huge price-tag

And, The Daily Star cite reports in Italy when claiming that a massive price-tag has been placed on the player’s head amidst political issues in Ukraine.

Louis van Gaal has admitted that he wants to add more depth to his Manchester United side, and the Dutchman watched them lose their season-opener at Old Trafford earlier today (Saturday).

A host of players have been linked, with Arturo Vidal and Marcos Rojo two names regularly linked with the Red Devils in the transfer window. However, there’s only two weeks left until it slams shut and time is starting to run out for new additions.

Club record bid

Whether Manchester United will be willing to pay a club-record fee to sign the playmaker remains to be seen, but they certainly aren’t the only team showing an interest.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is another to have been linked with the player, but again the club from north London would need to break the bank to make the signing.

Big Arsenal signings

The Gunners have already spent big at the Emirates Stadium this summer, with Alexis Sanchez joining from Barcelona 12 months after Mesut Ozil arrived for a significant fee.

Douglas Costa doesn’t have the same reputation as the aforementioned duo, and his signing at either club would be considered a gamble at the inflated price.
