Manchester United told Di Maria not for sale in transfer round-up (1)

Football News

Manchester United made a nightmare start to their first Premier League campaign under new boss Louis van Gaal, losing 2-1 to Swansea City at Old Trafford and putting in a very poor performance.

Van Gaal's 3-5-2 formation was exposed by the Welsh team in the first half and it lasted only 45 minutes before the Dutchman reverted to a flat back four. This didn't make a great deal of difference in the end and Wayne Rooney's acrobatic equaliser was not enough as Gylfi Sigurdsson scored the winner.

Meanwhile, Arsenal nearly had a their own subdued start to the campaign as they had to come behind from a first half goal against Crystal Palace. Last season's key man, Aaron Ramsey, was on hand to tap home an injury time winner and secure maximum points despite a subdued campaign.

There was plenty of drama all over the league but it was Manchester United's defeat that really stole the headlines. They put in a performance that highlighted Van Gaal's concerns about needing new players, which he made public before the match, that new players are needed at Old Trafford.

Today's transfer round-up begins with this very topic, but it may not be the news that many fans of the Premier League giants will have wanted to hear, not to mention Arsenal fans...

The Star Sunday

Manchester United's hopes of signing Angel Di Maria this summer have been hit after Carlo Ancelotti insisted the winger was not going anywhere.

Arsenal were told something similar with regards to Sami Khedira and Arsene Wenger's search for a deep-lying midfielder will have to continue somewhere other than the Santiago Bernabeu.

Both players were benched for the Spanish Super Cup victory over Sevilla in Cardiff on Tuesday, but the Real Madrid boss claimed this was purely because of the date they had returned from holiday after facing off in the World Cup final in Brazil.
