Atletico Madrid are reportedly considering making a move for Liverpool defender Daniel Agger.
According to the Daily Star, reports in England are suggesting that the defending La Liga champions are favourites for the signature of the Danish international.
Agger appears to have fallen down the pecking order with last season’s English Premier League runners-up, and he was not even in the matchday squad for their opening weekend victory over Southampton on Sunday.
New signing Dejan Lovren partnered Martin Skrtel in the heart of defence and with competition from the likes of Kolo Toure, Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori, it seems that the 29-year-old is now merely surplus to requirements at Anfield.
Barcelona had been strongly linked with bringing him to the Nou Camp, but the acquisitions of Thomas Vermaelen from Arsenal and Jeremy Mathieu from Valencia appear to have made up for their lack of numbers at the back.
Atletico have now emerged as the likely destination of the defender who has spent eight-and-a-half years with Liverpool.
Despite the Spanish champions seeing a number of star players leave the club this summer, they still have substantial cover in the centre of defence. He will give Diego Simeone another strong outlet in that area, with the likes of Diego Godin, Joao Miranda and Jose Gimenez already at his disposal.
But with Miranda being constantly linked with moves to either Barca or Manchester United, Agger could well be a direct replacement for the Brazilian alongside Godin as Atleti look to put up a stubborn title defence.
And with the Dane rumoured to be desperate to leave the Reds, Los Rojiblancos could well have themselves a bargain as a result. He has been a solid servant for Liverpool since Rafael Benitez brought him to the club from Brondby for £6 million in January 2006, making a total of 232 appearances in all competitions for them.
A series of niggling injuries throughout his spell though ultimately prevented him from really establishing himself as first-choice. Agger has won three trophies during his time at Anfield and although he missed the 2006 FA Cup success, he played the full match as his side won the Community Shield later that year.
He also played in the 2007 UEFA Champions League final where he picked up a runners-up medal after Liverpool came up short against AC Milan. His final trophy success came in the 2012 League Cup where the Reds edged out Cardiff City on penalties, though he did go off injured during the game.
A qualified tattoo artist, Agger has the initials YNWA (You’ll Never Walk Alone) across his fingers.
