WWE: Chris Jericho blames ignorant fans for John Cena heel turn debate

Football News

John Cena has been a leading baby face in the WWE for many years now, sitting atop the company with the backing of its leading figures behind the scenes.

But for some his continued success, even in the aftermath of his humiliating title in this weekend's SummerSlam pay-per-view title match, has started to grate a little and calls for Cena to undergo a heel turn having been gaining momentum.

Jericho questions anti-Cena fans

Recently returned WWE superstar Chris Jericho is certainly not one of those calling for a change in the John Cena motif however, with the veteran wrestler calling out certain WWE fans on the subject:

"No, I think that is kind of the pervading attitude amongst a lot of internet fans," Jericho responded when asked about a potential John Cena heel turn in a IGN Q&A session.

"They're not thinking of the big picture of probably the amount of merchandise that Cena sells which I think is probably five-to-one to the closest competitor. And the people that like to chant 'Cena sucks', half of them are wearing Cena shirts," continued Jericho.

"And just all of the work he's done. I think he's the most requested Make-A-Wish guy ever, more than anybody else. So those are the type of things that you think about more than just having him turn heel...If he did turn heel the thing is all the people that said Cena sucks would be chearing him anyways.

Jericho had one final jibe left for those who use the internet to voice their demands:

"Sometimes internet fans make me laugh at their immaturity which is worse than mine. At their lack of knowledge." the WWE star added with a smile.

Cena position

John Cena of course suffered a demoralizing defeat to Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam this past weekend as he saw his grasp on the World Title slip after having regained the belt for a 15th time earlier this year.

Even in defeat however Cena's position as the baby face was reinstated simply by the unfortunate beating he took to the shock of many in the arena.

Since a brief spell as a heel early in his career Cena has been held proudly aloft by the WWE as its shining light - indeed the 'face of the WWE'.

And whilst some fans may be right in the fact that, after 12 years of service, the positive spin placed on his character at all times is wearing a little thing.

But as Jericho alluded to, WWE is a business first and as such the huge financial benefits of John Cena the hero far out way the drama factor of seeing the Boston native turn heel.
