In partnership with the NFL in the UK

Green Bay Packers fans backed as the best in the NFL ahead of 2014 season

Green Bay Packers fans have long insisted that they are the best fans in the NFL and now, after the release of a new poll by Forbes, they have the stats to back it up.

Packers on top again

The magazine, using data supplied by Nielsen Scarborough, looked at everything from merchandise and tickets sold to social media followers in a bid to descover just which football franchise's fans have the right to proclaim themselves the 'best in the NFL' ahead of the upcoming 2014 season.

The Packers faithful came out on top, with the 13-time NFL championship winners coming out on top if five out of the seven categories used to reach the overall verdict.

Those of a green and gold persuasion have always been known as some of the most hardcore, and vocal, in the entire National Football League but some of the findings in the poll will surprise even the most loyal Lambeau Field veteran.

Of those adults living in the city of Green Bay itself the study found that only 16 percent were not a fan of their local NFL franchise - leaving them in a tiny majority compared to the 84 percent of adults who had either listened to, watched or attended a Packers game in the last 12 months.

Impressive stuff indeed.

What the numbers say

And whilst some of the larger NFL teams may attempt to hype their fans based purely on numbers, the 306,241 population of Green Bay is evidently bolstered by a huge array of out of town support.

Indeed the Packers outshot the entire NFL in terms of social media rankings - Green Bay can proudly claim 4.4 million Facebook faithful and 701,000 Twitter followers despite its tiny population.

The Green Bay Packers also ranked top in the categories of; 'Hometown Crowd' and 'Stadium Attendance Rank' (based on tickets sales in relation to capacity).

It was only in official NFL merchandise sales in which they lagged behind the competition, ranking seventh presumably only because those that attend Lambeau Field prefer to be creative with their costume rather than stick to the classics.

The best of the rest

With the NFL season proper only a matter of weeks away any chance for fans to get one up on their rivals is cause for celebration.

And whilst the Green Bay Packers fans can shout the loudest about the latest results, the rest of the top 10 can at least be grateful they made the cut at all.

The complete rankings were as follows:

1 - Green Bay Packers
2 - Denver Broncos
3-  New Orleans Saints
4 - New England Patriots
5 - Baltimore Ravens
6 - Indianapolis Colts
7 - (Tied) Dallas Cowboys
7 - (Tied) Pittsburgh Penguins
9 - Seattle Seahawks
10 - Chicago Bears

Of course there is only one ranking that matters when it comes down to it though, and whoever comes out on top in that one come February 1, 2015 will definitely be home to the 'happiest fans in the NFL' for one year at least.
