Manchester City turned down Angel di Maria transfer

Manchester United are close to wrapping up a record deal for Real Madrid winger Angel di Maria - but only after Manchester City rejected the chance to sign him twice according to the Daily Mail.

The Argentinian is expected to complete a £60 million move to Old Trafford before the close of the transfer window, and is said to have agreed a contract worth £180,000-per-week.

However the deal might not ever have happened if Manchester City had taken up the chance to sign the 26-year-old. According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United's great rivals turned down the chance to sign the Real Madrid winger twice because they didn't feel as though the deal represented value for money.

The paper say that officials from Real Madrid have approached Manchester City twice in the last two transfer windows. The Spanish giants have been looking to offload the Argentinian international to offset their spending on the likes of Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez.

Another issue for Manchester City is that they have hand their own spending restricted by Financial Fair Play and they decided to reinforce in defence rather than in attack.

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti confirmed earlier this week that Di Maria had asked to leave and it looks as though Manchester United will offer him a way out of the Bernabeu.

News of Manchester City's interest is unlikely to bother Manchester United fans as Louis van Gaal closes in on the major signing he has promised all summer.

Luke Shaw, Ander Herrera and Marcos Rojo have all signed on at Old Trafford for an overall fee of around £72 million, and more money is likely to be spent after Di Maria's arrival.

Daley Blind could be next on Manchester United's transfer hitlist as Van Gaal tries to bolster his options in defence and in midfield.
