There are many strange good luck charms in sports but the New York Yankees current five-game winning streak is being credited to a horse mask being worn by relief pitcher Shawn Kelley.

It all started with the Yankees, by their standards, languishing with a 63-61 record. On August 21 reliever Shawn Kelly had the bizarre yet inspirational idea of wearing a horse-head mask during the team's pre-game stretch.

Surprisingly the franchise has not lost a ball game since and naturally the team have identified the horse mask as the good luck charm for their success.

Kelly stated that the team have started referring to the mask as 'sea biscuit' and he also explained the reasons for its sudden emergence.

Kelly said: "When I see those things, randomly in a crowd, it makes me laugh, So I figured I'll do that, and it'll make everyone laugh in the clubhouse. And then we went on a winning streak."

Simply easing the tension around the place can have such a positive effect on the side and it certainly seems to be working for the Yankees, the squad are whole-heartedly buying into the concept that the Horse-mask is the reason for their upturn in fortunes.

Yankees outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury added: "Kelley is undefeated with the horse. I'm never going to go against that, At first, I was wondering who it was. And then I wondered why he had it on. And then we got on a little roll, and I figured it doesn't matter what the reason is. We're winning with it."

Since 'Seabiscuit' made his brilliant debut at Yankees Stadium, the team have registered 5.4 runs per game and only given up 2.2 runs per contest.

Time will tell how long the winning streak will last with the horse-mask but one thing for sure is that is bringing a humour and positivity to the team that can do wonders throughout a 162-game MLB season.
