Danny Welbeck targeted by six Premier League clubs

Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck has been targeted by no fewer than six Premier League clubs after Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal made it clear he wants a whole host of under-performing stars to leave Old Trafford in a wholesale clearout.

Welbeck has failed to start either of United's two Premier League games this season and looks primed for a late summer switch, if the Red Devils receive an offer in the region of £16 million.

Van Gaal clearly doesn't view Welbeck as a key part of his first-team plans moving forward and a string of their direct Premier League rivals would love to take advantage, with The Telegraph reporting that Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Hull City, Sunderland and Newcastle United all monitoring developments closely.

Arsenal lead the race

If the England international decides he has to reluctantly leave United for a star role elsewhere there is clearly huge interest in his signature, with Arsenal reported by The Mirror to have contacted United regarding a move for the England international earlier this week.

Arsenal are definitely in the market for a new centre-forward if the price is right, with Olivier Giroud definitely ruled out until at least late December after undergoing surgery on a broken left foot.

Welbeck would provide instant competition for Alexis Sanchez and Yaya Sanogo in the central strike role, although it looks very unlikely that United would sell to a traditional rival at such a late stage.

Where else could Welbeck go?

Spurs also believe Welbeck could fit their commitment to fast attacking football under Mauricio Pochettino, but are yet to launch a formal enquiry for a 23-year-old with 20 Premier League goals to his name

Hull City boss Steve Bruce is also keen and worked with Welbecl Sunderland, with a widespread search also including Everton proving how few proven forwards are available at this late stage of the summer.

Welbeck is a player with raw potential that is definitely capable of taking his game to another level, although it remains to be seen where he'll get the chance to do just that this season as the transfer window finally gets ready to slam shut.
