The defending champions Manchester City brushed aside last years runners up Liverpool in a 3-1 thriller at the Etihad on Monday night. The visitors enjoyed an early spell of possession but it was Manchester Cities Stefan Jovetic who pounced first when some sleepy defending allowed the Montenegrin in to smash home from close range. Shortly after the half it was Jovetic again in the right place at the right time to slot into an open goal making it 2-0 before the hour mark. Sergio Aguero came of the bench to make it 3-0 with his first touch of the game with a late Zabaleta own goal taking a little bit of the shine off an otherwise good performance from Manuel Pellegrini’s side. Stoke City gained a point away to Hull at the KC Stadium on the weekend amid some controversy when they scored from a thrown on they shouldn’t have been awarded. The potters had gone 1-0 down to 10 man Hull and were fortunate to score in the 83rd minute sharing the points with a very unhappy Tigers side.
