Manchester United are willing to settle for the £8 million acquisition of Nigel De Jong after Louis van Gaal pulled the plug on a £39.5 million deal to sign Arturo Vidal amid growing concerns over the Juventus midfielder's lingering knee injury. (Daily Express)

The Red Devils look set for a busy transfer deadline day with a number of players coming in and out of Old Trafford, as Van Gaal continues to wield the axe in an attempt to overhaul his playing squad.

De Jong has been linked with Manchester United for much of the summer, and could now fly to England to undergo a medical and sign a deal ahead of a prospective switch from AC Milan.

Van Gaal remains keen on recruiting another defensive midfielder despite the arrival of versatile Ajax star Daley Blind, with the former Manchester City man now the most likely arrival before the window closes at 11pm.

Manchester United transfer gossip:

Louis van Gaal will let Danny Welbeck leave Old Trafford on loan, but it will cost any potential suitor £5 million to sign the Manchester United striker on a short-term basis. (The Sun)

Welbeck's £68,000-a-week wages would need to be covered in full, while a loan cost and "other extras" must also be signed off for the move to happen.

The Colombian striker is set to move to Old Trafford for the 2014/15 campaign, amid growing concerns over the long-term fitness of Robin van Persie.

The 25-year-old is demanding to recoup the losses from the £2.6 million he would have made had he seen out his current deal at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, Javier Hernandez has completed his surprise move to Real Madrid, at least that's according to the coach of the Mexico national team, Miguel Herrera. (Twitter)

The Red Devils striker has appeared unsettled at Old Trafford for some time, and with Louis van Gaal unable to offer him guaranteed first-team football he's been tipped to leave either permanently or on loan before the transfer deadline.
