David Zurutuza scored twice as Real Sociedad battled back from 2-0 down to stun Real Madrid 4-2 at the Anoeta.

Sociedad lost 1-0 at promoted Eibar last weekend and things looked bad again when Real raced into a 2-0 lead after just 11 minutes through Sergio Ramos and Gareth Bale.

However, a Zurutuza double along with goals from Inigo Martinez and Carlos Vela sealed a comfortable victory in the end.

Three changes

The hosts made three changes from their opening defeat including two in defence as Alberto de la Bella and Joseba Zaldua replaced Carlos Martinez and Yuri Berchiche, while Gonzalo Castro came in for Sergio Canales.

Cristiano Ronaldo was missing for Carlo Ancelotti’s men and was replaced by Isco in one of two changes from the opening win over La Liga newboys Cordoba, while Daniel Carvajal came in at right-back with Alvaro Arbeloa making way.

The UEFA Champions League winners came flying out of the blocks and went ahead after just five minutes, when Ramos met Toni Kroos’ corner with a typically-powerful header into the bottom corner.

He almost got his second as he crashed a free-kick against the bar before Real doubled their lead inside 11 minutes. Luka Modric found Gareth Bale who showed quick feet on the edge of the area to nutmeg Gorka Elustondo, before coolly sliding the ball home.

Fast starting Madrid

Real looked rampant and could have stretched their advantage even further. Marcelo went close on a couple of occasions, while Ramos headed narrowly over from Kroos’ corner with what could have been his hat-trick goal. He then showed off his defensive skills at the other end with a flying block to deny Esteban Granero.

Kroos was thwarted by Enaut Zubikarai before the Basque boys halved the deficit 10 minutes from the break. Martinez was unmarked at the far post to finish after Xabi Prieto flicked on a corner.

They then levelled the contest four minutes before the break when de la Bella sent in a cross from the left-hand side, and Zurutuza equalised with a bullet header that left Iker Casillas with no chance.

Impressive turnaround

Jagoba Arrasate’s men incredibly took the lead for the first time midway through the second half. Some clever link-up play between Prieto and Canales down the right saw the former send a dangerous ball into the area, and Zurutuza got across the defender to steer the ball beyond Casillas.

The visitors were stunned and Txuriurdin were in dreamland 10 minutes later. The defence stopped thinking Vela had controlled the ball with his arm after a corner had been flicked on, and the former Arsenal striker took full advantage as he smashed into the roof of the net.

Los Blancos desperately rallied later on with substitute Sami Khedira heading over from James Rodriguez’s corner, before the Colombian’s sweeping effort soon after was well held by Zubikarai.

Karim Benzema struck the outside of the post with his side’s final opportunity, but Sociedad held out for a magnificent victory at the Anoeta.
