With many new and promising signings, Van Gaal has begun reshaping the squad. Will these players help compensate for United's horrible start to the campaign? Only time will tell.

For now, we can speculate on how these five signings might perform this season.

1. Angel di Maria

The Argentinean maestro had a great season at Real Madrid last year as well as a decent World Cup. With great flexibility in midfield, and an unusually perfect talent of finding teammates in practical goal scoring situations, Di Maria is undoubtedly the best addition to the squad in a long time.

His pinpoint passing, unbelievable crossing, and raw pace make him one of the best midfielders in the world. While a £59.7 million might seem a little steep, he will prove his worth sooner or later.

2. Marcos Rojo

Like Di Maria, Rojo is a considerably flexible player. He is a great full-back but can also perform the role of a center back quite well. With United's defensive problems, signing Rojo was a very important decision, although it might not seem like much.  He has a lot to prove, taking up Ferdinand's old kit number.

Rojo also had a praiseworthy World Cup, helping his team reach the finals. He is, without any doubt a great addition to the squad.

3. Ander Herrera

Quite a few have been doubtful about this particular deal. Signing a rather mediocre midfielder from Athletic Bilbao for £36 million seemed like a fools errand at the time. It's safe to say that a majority of people didn't see this coming.

However, Herrera has shown what he is capable of with an amazing pre-season. He was among the select few who played well in the disastrous league openers.

It is still hard to determine if Herrera will prove to be worth the money and effort it took to bring him to Old Trafford, but from the looks of it, he seems to be on a steady path to prove his worth.

4. Luke Shaw

A brilliant English fullback to say the least. Luke Shaw had a wondrous season at Southampton last year and is looking to build his career into a great one at United. The 19-year-old fullback is often compared to the Welsh wizard Gareth Bale, and has the potential to reach that level.

He is defensively solid as well as offensively active; a perfect wing back. Shaw too, has a lot to prove because it took £30 million and a huge amount of effort to get him to the club.

5. Daley Blind

Yet another World Cup hero heading to Old Trafford. He had a mind blowing tournament this summer with the Netherlands and along with Rojo and Shaw, could be the answer to all of United's defensive problems.

Blind has great chemistry with Van Gaal and Robin van Persie which could prove extremely useful, as was seen in Brazil a month back.

Van Gaal seems to have fulfilled his promise to rebuild his squad. However, he has yet a lot of work to do before the fans start to become satisfied. There are yet many players to discard and many yet to buy. Let's see if he can turn this season around.
