Fans of the Gunners were hoping that the club would invest in a tough tackling central-midfielder in this past transfer window, with the likes of Jack Wilshere, Mathieu Flamini, Mikel Arteta and Co. competing for places in the middle of the park at the Emirates.
Carvalho, then, would certainly give Wenger's side another option in midfielder, and it appears they could still bring him in during this campaign. At just 22, the youngster would no doubt prove a long term investment for the Gunners, but it remains to be seen as to whether they can negotiate a price with Lisbon in the winter market.
Immediate focus
For now, though, Arsenal will have to get through the coming months with the team at Wenger's disposal. The club's deadline day signing of ex-Manchester United forward Danny Welbeck certainly improved their options in attack with Frenchman Olivier Giroud currently out on the sidelines with a long term injury.
Arsenal haven't got off to the best start in this season's Premier League, having dropped points against the likes of Everton and Leicester City, but Wenger's side will be looking to find some form after the international break.
It doesn't get any easier for Wenger's side, though, as they play host to Manchester City on September 13, which will be followed by a trip to Germany to take on Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League group stages a few days later.
The Gunners will be hoping to improve upon last season's campaign after they finished in fourth place in the Premier League and secured FA Cup silverware.
