Manchester United have reservations over Vlaar & Schar

Manchester United boss Louis Van Gaal is well aware that he needs to strengthen his defence, but doesn't think there are enough top quality players available.

This has been reported by the Daily Mail, who have suggested that the Red Devils boss has reservations over potential deals for Aston Villa centre-half Ron Vlaar and Basle defender Fabian Schar.

It remains to be seen as to whether United will step up their interest in either of Vlaar or Schar in the neat future, but it appears that Van Gaal isn't sure whether the duo have the qualities to succeed at Old Trafford.

Vlaar, of course, worked under Van Gaal for the Netherlands, but despite impressing at the tournament, it appears that his former boss is undecided as to whether to take him to Manchester. Schar, meanwhile, has impressed at Basel, but is still fairly inexperienced at just 22-years-old.

Van Gaal wanted to land Germany's World Cup-winning defender Mats Hummels in this past summer's transfer window, but Borussia Dortmund quickly rejected the possibility of their star man departing. It remains to be seen, however, as to whether United step up their interest once again in 2015, but it certainly won't prove easy landing him.

Defensive problems

It's not surprising that Manchester United have been linked with defenders after a disastrous start to the season. The Red Devils have struggled at the back, with the likes of Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans and Co. failing to impress so far.

Van Gaal's side were humiliated at MK Dons in the Capital One Cup last month as they conceded four goals and they were beaten 5-3 against Premier League new-boys Leicester City this past weekend.

Having lost the likes of Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra in the summer, the Red Devils are certainly in need of improvement.

United will certainly be hoping to improve throughout the campaign, starting this weekend against West Ham at the Theatre of Dreams. If things don't get better at the back, it appears then that Van Gaal will be extremely busy once again in the next transfer window.
