Daley Blind could play in central-defence against West Ham

Manchester United star Daley Blind could play as a make-shift centre-half for the club's clash with West Ham United this weekend after Chris Smalling picked up a thigh injury in training yesterday.

This has been reported by the Mirror, who have suggested that the versatile Dutchman may have to slot into the central-defensive role after an injury crisis at Old Trafford.

Defensive disaster

With Smalling now a major doubt for this weekend's clash, Manchester United also have Jonny Evans unavailable after he picked up an injury in the Red Devils' humiliating defeat to Premier League new-boys Leicester City last weekend.

Phil Jones, meanwhile, is still out of action after picking up a hamstring injury on England duty earlier this month, and youngster Tyler Blackett - who has played a key role under Van Gaal so far this term - is suspended after picking up a red card against the Foxes.

Versatile Blind

It appears, then, that Louis van Gaal will have to use Blind at the heart of his defence. The Dutchman has featured for United on two occasions since moving from Ajax on deadline day, and has so far starred in the defensive midfield role.

And, if he does play at centre-half this weekend, he may well partner fellow summer signing Marcos Rojo in the back-line. It's expected that the Argentine will move into the middle after playing at left-back. Luke Shaw, then, should make his first start for the club, with Brazilian ace Rafael da Silva also starring in the full-back role.

Nightmare start

Manchester United will be desperate to secure all three points this weekend, as they go in search of improvement after a nightmare 90 minutes at the King Power Stadium last time out.

The Red Devils have secured just five points from their opening fixtures, and will be determined to put a fine run of form together in the immediate future. They will, though, have to do it with a make-shift defence, but Van Gaal will be hoping his attacking stars continue to fire.

Van Gaal will have a selection dilemma in attack for completely different reasons this weekend, with the likes of Juan Mata, Angel di Maria, Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Radamel Falcao, Adnan Januzaj and Co. all competing for places.
