Manchester United trio face uncertain futures

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has cast doubt on the futures of three of his defenders at Old Trafford.

As reported by the Mirror, the Red Devils chief has insisted that he was aware of the poor fitness records of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans before he took over at the club last summer.

Facing the axe?

And now it appears, that with the trio still struggling with injury this term, the Manchester United boss could axe them in the future.

When speaking about their records, the United manager said: “I have been told and now they are confirming that.

“But I have good hopes that we shall improve in that matter, because normally I don’t have any injuries.”

It remains to be seen, however, as to whether Van Gaal can sort out their injuries over the course of the season, or whether he will have to eventually move them on.

If Van Gaal does make the trio available for sale, then there should be a number of clubs interested in their services. In fact, it already appears that Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is set to make a move for Smalling in the January transfer window, but it's not certain as to whether United will allow another player to leave for the north London outfit.

Out of action

Of course, with all three players out of action, Manchester United had to call up youngster Paddy McNair to the first team, as the Red Devils just about overcame West Ham with a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford earlier today.

McNair was impressive on his debut as he partnered Argentine ace Marcos Rojo at centre-back, whilst Luke Shaw made his debut for the club at left full-back. Goals from Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie helped secure a win, in a game that saw the United receive a sending off.
