Cat Zingano returned to the UFC on Saturday night and although she started slow, she managed to finish Amanda Nunes and set-up a fight with Ronda Rousey.
Zingano said herself that she was 'seeing stars' after a barrage of punches from Nunes in round one, but she bounced back to finish the Brazilian fighter in the third round via TKO.
The win means she'll finally get the title shot against that she earned back in April 2013, when she beat Miesha Tate.
Save the date for epic showdown?
The win comes with a lot of rewards for Zingano, with the title shot being the biggest one, but she wasn't just doing it for herself. She wanted people to take notice - especially, Dana White.
The UFC President revealed in a post-fight interview with MMAJunkie, that, 'The Alpha Cat', Zingano walked over to him and screamed "Do you see me?"
“Yes, I see you." Said White.
Ever since suffering the ACL injury that cost her the shot against Rousey, and coaching role on The Ultimate Fighter 18, as well as the loss of her husband in January, Zingano has been the enigma of the women's division.
She didn't have the rivalry that Tate and Rousey had, the WWE-esque storyline of Bethe Correia or the movie star background of Gina Carano.
Nobody knew what to expect upon her return. Would she be as good as before? Is she a worthy contender or just luck vs Tate? Can she even fight anymore?
Well Zingano answered those questions more and now she is the number one contender, and made sure that no movie star is going to take her spot - especially according to White.
"This was the ‘Shutup about Gina Carano fight, I think.'” Said White.
“I think that’s the statement she wanted to make, and she made it loud and clear. She’s been away for awhile, she had some injuries, she’s dealing with some personal problems. She is back. I think the fans can see her and she needed to remind everybody why she was in line for a title fight. She did it tonight.” He added.
As for Zingano - her focus was into this fight and nothing more.
“I was really pushing to get through this fight and I just had to get through this one and then I could look at the horizon." Said the number one contender.
Well the horizon looks but clear. There's only one mountain left and sitting atop is the powerhouse that is Ronda Rousey.
