Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol had been teammates at the Los Angeles Lakers for seven seasons before this summer. And then it all changed.
Gasol's contract in LA was coming to an end earlier this year and the power forward was weighing up the options of what he wanted to do. Well, according to reports, Kobe tried his absolute best to convince the Spaniard to stay at the Staples Center.
Kobe and Gasol had their run-ins in the past and would not be afraid to point out each others mistakes. But that kind of competitiveness made them closer. It's what Kobe thrives on and he saw that in Pau.
Urged to Stay
So when free agency came around, Bryant wanted his longtime teammate to stay, even going as far as to reportedly tell Gasol that he wanted to retire with him and that he should stay with the Los Angeles Lakers.
It’s something that the 34-year old Pau must have spent actual time considering as he was strongly being linked with re-signing with the Lakers before eventually making the move from West to East with the Chicago Bulls.
In all honesty it really isn't surprising that Gasol ventured off for pastures new. The Lakers have a completely pitiful roster going into the 2014/15 NBA season that is headlined by such stars as Jeremy Lin and perennial MVP candidate Nick "Swaggy P" Young.
What is surprising however is the lengths Kobe went to try and keep Gasol when you consider how blase he was about letting other players leave, cough Dwight Howard we're all looking at you, cough.News Now - Sport News
