The amount of money that footballers earn is a contentious subject which tends to divide opinion - although most are in agreement that the situation is now out of hand, and it’s only getting worse.

But, ultimately, football is a business of supply and demand. And the top clubs, in order to sign the world’s best players, need to offer the most competitive pay packets or the players in question will simply go elsewhere.

Messi and Ronaldo deserve their riches

Generally, the highest-paid players are the most skilled footballers on the planet. Few would argue against the general consensus that Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, of Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively, deserve their riches because of the amount of joy they have brought to millions of football fans over the past decade.

And the same can be said of the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Wayne Rooney and Gareth Bale.

Some contract offers too generous

But sometimes clubs are a little too generous with their contract offers for certain players.
