A shocking new report has claimed that Oscar Pistorius made a private 'nine minute phone call to ex-girlfriend Jenna Edkins' shortly before he killed Reeva Steenkamp on Valentines Day last year, according to The Independent.

The athlete was found guilty of culpable homicide, but cleared of murder after a six month trial that ended last month in Pretoria.

Undiscovered evidence?

However, a new book has made the claims about the phone call to his ex-girlfriend who he was 'on off' with for five years. It has been revealed that the police knew nothing about the call having ever existed, hence why no evidence of this was ever brought up during the trial.

The phone, registered under Edkins' father's name, was saved in Pistorius' contacts under the name "Babyshoes". That in itself should have aroused some suspicion from the police investigating the death, who did not register the number had anything to do with his ex-girlfriend - who is a fellow athlete.

The phone was one of two handsets that the South African owned, and was removed from the crime scene for over two weeks before it was handed over to authorities.

By this time, the whole phone had been completely wiped so there was no evidence the call even existed.

This newfound evidence is due to be exposed in a new book: Behind the Door – which is about the trial, by Barry Bateman of Eyewitness News and Mandy Wiener, two leading journalists on the case.

No case?

Despite all this, it's said that a prosecution source has since dismissed the evidence anyway, saying that Judge Thokozile Masipa would have considered the call character evidence and disallowed it.

The family of Pistorius claimed they, like the police, new nothing about the phone call or any deletions on the device, stating they: “Were not aware of any deletions that could be relevant to this trial, or have impacted on this trial”.

Twitter defence

The day after it was revealed Ms. Steenkamp had been killed, Edkins took to Twitter to give her opinions on the event.

Some of the tweets include: "People must stop jumping on the bandwagon with such hurtful allegations. Os is the loving , amazing inspirational person we know him to be..

"You have all my familys love and support #loveandsupportoscar

"All I am saying is let him speak , let his side be heard without jumping to conclusions.. Love and thoughts to Reevas famiy..

"I would just like to say , I have dated Oscar on off for 5 YEARS, NOT ONCE has he EVER lifted a finger to me , made me fear for my life.."

Her last tweet gaining 436 retweets and 96 favourites.

Edkins is featured in the sprinters' autobiography too, in which she is described as: “delightful, sweet-natured, beautiful girl with blonde hair and sparkling blue eyes”.

Pistorius faces up to 15 years in prison after being found guilty of culpable homicide and will be sentenced on October 13.
