Sami Khedira is desperate to complete a January transfer to Arsenal, according to the Daily Star.

The Germany international has been pushed out of the first team picture at Real Madrid after failing to agree an extension to his current contract. He would be allowed to leave for free next summer but Carlo Ancelotti is determined to generate some cash by selling him in January.

Terms agreed

Khedira is reported to have agreed a contract in principle with the Gunners but is waiting for the two clubs to agree a transfer fee. The 27-year-old is growingly keen to complete his move to north London and has told Real Madrid to not begrudge him a move in the new year.

For Arsene Wenger, signing Khedira would bring an end to a transfer saga stretching back to July. The Arsenal manager was first alerted to the midfielder's availability in the summer transfer window, but talks over a move broke down over his wage demands.

Khedira reportedly wanted as much as £200,000-a-week to move to the Emirates Stadium and that proved too rich for Wenger.

Rival interest

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho also showed an interest in Khedira. The Special One still holds an affinity to the World Cup winner having spent three years with him at the Bernabeu and wanted to bring him to Stamford Bridge.

However, with the likes of Nemanja Matic and Ramires already filling the midfield, Khedira us unlikely to get the first team action he wants. The situation is similar with Manchester United, who have also shown an interest.

Despite Louis van Gaal's willingness to offer Khedira a hefty wage packet, it is likely Marouane Fellaini would have to leave Old Trafford to make room.

Own position

At Arsenal, Khedira could claim a position for himself in defensive midfield as Mathieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta are unlikely to compete with a World Cup winner. He would get the chance to play every week in the Premier League and that seems to have convinced him.

Arsenal's need for a defensive midfielder has already been cited as a major problem for Wenger in the early stages of this season. Flamini has been exposed more than once while Arteta continues to struggle with injury.

Injury history

A big concern for Arsenal in signing Khedira will be his injury history. As a defensive midfielder, Khedira is expected to compete in big challenges and his serious knee injury is likely to cause concern at some point in his career.
