Lionel Messi missed a penalty for Argentina just before half time in their friendly against Brazil in China.

Brazil striker Diego Tardelli gave the World Cup semi-finals the lead mid-way through the first-half but Argentina were handed the perfect opportunity to get back into the match with five minutes before the interval.

But the Barcelona star could not convert, tamely hitting his penalty to the goalkeeper’s right.

In net for Brazil was Jefferson, who didn’t have to do too much to keep out Messi’s effort, diving low to his right and palming it away. Messi almost turned the follow up in but couldn’t convert while on the stretch.

Good game

The scoreline was 1-0 to Brazil at half-time, with both sides playing good attacking football despite the unfamiliar surroundings.

Many had hoped this would be the World Cup final in the Maracana earlier this summer, but instead fans have had to make do with a friendly in Beijing.

While the disappointment is obvious, the two sides did an excellent job of putting a show on for the fans.
