Liverpool and Manchester United will face a fight to land one of their key January transfer target in Xherdan Shaqiri, as Juventus are ready to step in with a possible bid as they search for winter additions.
The Daily Express are running with reports from Italy that have claimed the Serie A champions are planning major January transfer activity and that the Switzerland international is one of the top names on their list.
However, both Liverpool and Manchester United have been credited with an interest in Shaqiri in recent weeks, so any move by Juventus would likely be of interest to the Premier League duo.
If the Italian club do decide to spark something of a bidding war, they are unlikely to prevail if either one of Brendan Rodgers or Louis van Gaal decide they really want to recruit the 23-year-old attacking midfielder.
Serie A finances aren’t what they once were and Premier League clubs are now able to far outspend their European rivals, though there are questions about whether there is any great need for Shaqiri at either Anfield or Old Trafford.
Manchester United spent significant money on recruiting the likes of Ander Herrera, Radamel Falcao and Angel di Maria, with all looking to play regularly.
This makes fitting Shaqiri into the team a tricky task, and Van Gaal is unlikely to want that with the lack of Champions League already limiting opportunities to rotate and keep players happy as it is.
Liverpool may be more suited to a move for him but, again, they bought Adam Lallana and Mario Balotelli this summer and have a not insignificant number of attacking players to choose from.
Another factor to consider, which is probably the most crucial, is that Shaqiri has already revealed he does not think Bayern Munich will let him leave during the January transfer window.
