Liverpool haven't offered former Barcelona star Victor Valdes a four-day trial, contrary to reports.

This has been suggested Guillem Balague, via Spanish newspaper Sport, where Valdes' agent Gines Carvajal rejected the story, insisting that the Premier League club haven't offered his player a trial.

Injury problem

In truth, the reports suggesting Liverpool were set to offer Valdes a trial didn't come as a major surprise, as the experienced goalkeeper has been out of action for some time.

The 32-year-old left Barcelona after suffering a cruciate ligament injury to his knee and has yet to find a club as he closes in on a return to action. It had been suggested that Liverpool chief Brendan Rodgers wanted to examine his fitness before offering him a deal with the club, but that claim has now been rejected by the player's agent.

Carvajal said: "Liverpool didn't offer us a 4-day trial - the story is false."

It remains to be seen, however, as to whether Liverpool will step up their interest in the Spaniard or whether they will end up offering him a trial. The Reds may yet have to battle Ligue 1 outfit Monaco for the star once he proves his fitness.

Goalkeeping dilemma

Liverpool fans will be hoping that Valdes joins their club in the near future, as the Merseyside outfit look to add competition to the goalkeeping department. Valdes, then, would challenge current No.1 Simon Mignolet for a place in the first-team if he was to complete a deal with the club.

Mignolet - who joined the club from Sunderland in the summer of 2013 - has endured a tricky time of it of late and has proved inconsistent for Rodgers' side. With the club leaking goals, Rodgers may well have to act in January as the club go in search of success this season.

Valdes, at 32, would no doubt still prove quite the coup for the Anfield outfit if he can return to his best form. The possible deal may well even improve Mignolet between the sticks, as it would offer him greater competition.

The club's immediate attention will turn to this weekend as the side go in search of all three points against Premier League new-boys QPR at Loftus Road.
