Fernando Alonso is deciding whether to join McLaren next season, or take a risk by having a year off driving and hoping he can join Mercedes when Lewis Hamilton's current contract runs out in 2015, according to the BBC.
The Spaniard's contract has been terminated at Ferrari - per his request - who have replaced him with four time champion and former Red Bull driver Sebastien Vettel.
Alonso is now looking to get himself a drive for the coming season, with McLaren the most likely destination after he revealed he wouldn't be using a Mercedes power-unit next year, quashing any chance of him joining Williams or Lotus.
Although McLaren insist that no contract has been signed with Alonso, it is understood that a deal has been agreed and they are waiting for Alonso to make his decision before announcing their line up for 2015, putting the future of current drivers Jenson Button and Kevin Magnussen in doubt.
"You shouldn't worry about me," Button said.
"I am in a great place in my life right now and whatever happens next year I am happy."
"I have been in the sport for a long time. I have won a world title and 15 races but Kevin is in his first season and there is more pressure on him to get a drive. I just hope they make the right decision."
Alonso at McLaren?
However, if Alonso were to join McLaren, it would not necessarily mean that he would stay for longer than a year, and the eight time Constructors' Championship winners are looking for an indication of commitment from the 33-year-old.
McLaren have had torrid time of late, and will have their work cut out to convince Alonso - who some consider to be the best driver in the world - that their new Honda engine will be able to compete effectively when it makes it's debut in the coming season.
If the Spaniard does decide to take a sabbatical, it should not be taken as an indication that he will be joining Mercedes in 2016, with Toto Wolff announcing he is not looking to replace his current team in the near future, and speculation about a new contract being on the cards for Hamilton.
Mercedes are aware of McLaren possibly making a move for the Briton to return to his former team, and if this is the case, Alonso will be on alert and ready to snap up his opportunity to join the 2014 Constructors' Championship winners.
The likely move is for Alonso is to join McLaren for the 2015 season, after announcing that there was 'not a big risk' of him not having a drive next year and McLaren looking to be much more competitive with a new engine next season.
