During his 13 years at Chelsea Frank Lampard picked up a number of personal awards, and he's carried on in that fashion at new club Manchester City by picking up the player of the month award.

Despite having sealed a shock loan move to the Etihad Stadium in August, Lampard had to wait until September 13th for his debut, but his performances over the rest of the month were enough to see him rewarded with the accolade.

The midfield legend scored four goals in the month, despite making just two starts, and his impact from the bench may have left Chelsea fans wondering why they let their all time record goalscorer leave, especially as he bagged a late equaliser when the two teams met.

Lampard pipped fellow midfielders James Milner and David Silva to the award which was voted for by over 6,000 loyal City fans.

With the results announced on the club's official website, Lampard's success was described as "testament to one of the Premier League's greatest midfielders longevity."

While the article continued, saying the 36-year-old midfield ace will "no doubt be a crucial member of Manuel Pellegrini's squad this season."

And it's not just the fans at the Etihad who have been impressed with their new star.

Club captain Vincent Kompany said: "He is still so clever, still extremely motivated, and ultimately you play so many competitions you need all the guys to be there and he’s another player who will make our team stronger."

The former England man's form hasn't just won him a player of month award, it's also caused speculation that City will try to extend his existing loan deal which is due to expire on January 1st.

While some may have expected Lampard's move to the Premier League champions to be purely based on keeping up his fitness levels, Pellegrini has in fact gained an important squad member.

With Yaya Toure having suffered from a sluggish start to the season, Lampard has been responsible for providing goals from midfield for City, something he done with such regularity during his time at Stamford Bridge.

Should he stay?

While Lampard's form at Manchester City has been impressive, should the reigning Premier League champions be looking to extend his current deal?

Yes, Lampard still has plenty to offer but a club of Manchester City's stature should perhaps not be relying on a 36-year-old deemed surplus to requirements by their title rivals.

However, with Toure having suffered an inconsistent start to the season Lampard's importance has been heightened, and should the Ivorian travel to the African Cup of Nations at the turn of the year, City may need at least one more month out of the Chelsea icon.
