Chelsea look set to challenge Arsenal for the signature of German World Cup winner Sami Khedira, with the two clubs set to go head to head for the midfield ace in the January transfer window, according to the Daily Express.

Chelsea are looking to offer goalkeeper Petr Cech as part of a deal to bring Khedira to Stamford Bridge, which would scupper Arsenal's chances of bringing the player to north London.

Potential benefits

A swap deal including Cech and Khedira would benefit both players as they have both found playing time hard to come by. Cech has lost his place in Mourinho's side to young Belgian keeper Thibaut Courtois and has even admitted he might have to end his 10 year stay at Stamford Bridge soon if he continues to play second fiddle.

On the other hand Khedira has lost his place in the side to summer recruit Toni Kroos and has become increasingly frustrated at his lack of opportunities under Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti.

Ancelotti's preference

It is believed that Ancelotti would prefer to make a move for Manchester United 'keeper David de Gea, as he views him as an ideal replacement for Iker Casillas due to his recent fine form and age.

However, it is highly unlikely that United will let De Gea leave due to his importance, and are looking to open contract talks with the Spaniard, leaving Ancelotti with the task of looking elsewhere for a goalkeeper.

Cech would be an ideal option for Ancelotti due to his current status in the Chelsea squad, although this would leave Keylor Navas's position in the Madrid squad in question, even though the Costa Rican only joined the European champions in the summer.

Chelsea for Khedira

It can also be argued that Mourinho does not need to add Khedira to his squad due to the plethora of midfield players he already has in his squad such as Nemanja Matic, Cesc Fabregas, Ramires and John Obi Mikel.

Additionally, Arsenal also have a notable amount of central midfielder players in their squad already, although they have been criticised for their inability to purchase a reliable holding midfielder, with Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini failing to convince in that position.

This can be seen as a continuation of the rivalry between Mourinho and Wenger as they look to go head to head again, this time in the transfer market.

Although it looked like Arsenal were frontrunners for the signature of Khedira, Chelsea's offer could derail their plans as the holding midfielder has made it clear in the past that he thinks highly of Mourinho and would welcome the chance to work with him again.
