Former Manchester United boss David Moyes has revealed that he was surprised by the club's decision to let England striker Danny Welbeck join rivals Arsenal, reports the Express.

The forward joined the Gunners on transfer deadline day for £16 million, and Moyes has admitted that the deal was unexpected.

Great player

In fact, Moyes has insisted that Welbeck was a great player for Manchester United as he played in all of the big games.

Moyes said: "Danny Welbeck was great for us at Manchester United.

"We played him in nearly all the big games and, more importantly, [he was] one of your own boys you bring through.

"There are not many young British players out there, so it was a bit of a surprise for me [that he was sold to Arsenal].

"But whoever is in charge has to decide what route they choose."

Welbeck was clearly way down in the pecking order at the Theatre of Dreams, with the Red Devils already possessing an array of attacking talent at the club. Despite already having star duo Robin van Persie and captain Wayne Rooney at the club, the Red Devils landed Colombian hitman Radamel Falcao on deadline day.

Van Gaal can also call upon youngster James Wilson who looks set for a bright future, whilst the likes of Juan Mata, Adnan Januzaj and Angel di Maria can also chip in with goals throughout the campaign.

The attacking talent will all be hoping to hit top form in the Red Devils' next outing, as Van Gaal's side travel to the Hawthorns to take on West Brom.
